Google Voice goes live

Google Voice is now available to users in the US, allowing them to convert their existing numbers into Google Voice numbers

Using a technology called “porting”, users in America can now turn their mobile number into a Google Voice number.

Google Voice promises to be the one phone number you will ever need; it can ring on every phone or computer you happen to be using. It doesn’t matter whether you have the iPhone, BlackBerry, Android or even a landline, you’ll be able to receive calls no matter what you’re using.

Your Google Voice number thus rids you of the need to give several phone numbers to your contacts. When a Google Voice user makes or receives calls from the computer or laptop, it will not affect the mobile-phone minutes; all domestic calls made from a computer will be free, and the international calls will come cheaper too.

The switch-over to Google Voice is reportedly very easy, the people who know your cell number won’t even notice the slightest change. A Google app even lets the users set their own rules per caller, blocking and diverting individual numbers to voicemail.

Google Voice number service also promises to give users the ability to send free text messages with computer or mobile. However, after getting Google Voice, new users might face up to three days of disruptions in sending and receiving text messages, since the porting process completion takes time.

The porting service will be offered at a cost of USD 20 and it will require the user to end his contract with his current carrier.
