The UAE is set to become one of a few select countries internationally to introduce 4G wireless network connections.
Speaking about the 4G network, Hatem Bamatraf, Du’s Senior Vice President for Network Development, said that the company is currently in the process of selecting a provider for its next generation 4G wireless network.
"We have agreed with a number of suppliers to do testing," Bamatraf said.
If 4G networks are introduced, the UAE will become only the sixth country in the world to launch this kind of mobile broadband speed. The speed will reportedly be one gigabyte per second, which is more than 20 times faster than the current speed available.
"It's a wonderful technology, it will add a lot of enhancement to the broadband experience and provide more bandwidth with less latency, so you could access the web much faster than you can now. Plus, it adds efficiencies to us from a network perspective," Bamatraf added.
He did not specify an exact date for the availability of this service, but said it would be commercially available this year. However, since the technology is relatively new, Bamatraf said that he expects some challenges along the way.
"There will be some challenges with the roll-out because it is a different technology, it's a different spectrum, it's a different equipment and it's different carriers," Bamatraf said. "Even additional electrical wires will have to be added to enhance the current networks."
